J-14 (October 1999)
Christina Aguilera always dreamed that her days of singing in the shower would one day lead her to a career in pop music. That day came true when she joined The New Mickey Mouse Club. Like veterans Keri Russell and Britney Spears, Christina crafted her dancing and singing skills on the show. But she never imagined she'd soon have a hit with "Genie In A Bottle," which made it to number one on the Billboard charts. All of a sudden, this 18-year-old talent is the new singing sensation, or as some critics have called her, "the new Mariah Carey." But Christina, who was born in Staten Island and grew up in Pittsburg, stay down-to-earth. She's a big sis to four younger siblings and she admits she's not image-conscious. "Society has created this image of the perfect girl. Lots of times we buy into that, to the point where we don't feel good about ourselves. It's my mission to change that whole mind-set," she says.
